3-Day Travel Itinerary for Essaouira, Morocco

Last Updated on 23rd October 2025 by Jessie

Have 3 days in Essaouira? This travel itinerary mixes ocean air with coastal culture—day trips, medina exploring, seafood dinners, and relaxed beach time.

Essaouira is the ideal Moroccan city for travellers – in my not-so-humble opinion. A fishing town that offers a lazy coastal atmosphere, whilst also boasting an incredible ancient medina packed with all the best cafes, art galleries and local craftsmen. It’s little wonder Essaouira has been a melting pot of artists, expats and backpackers for decades. Whether you’re coming from Marrakech, Agadir, or one of the smaller surf villages, a 3-day escape to Essaouira offers the ideal mix of urban novelty and coastal charm.

This itinerary is perfect for a long weekend or a short stop on a longer Moroccan surf coast itinerary. Here’s how to spend three dreamy days in Essaouira.

  1. First and foremost, get travel insurance with SafetyWing. They’re super affordable and one of the few companies that let you buy insurance mid-trip.
  2. Book the dreamiest Moroccan abode on Booking.com. They’re my go-to for accomodation because you can save loooaads with their loyalty discounts.
  3. Or if you’re after the one-stop-shop, BookSurfCamps is the best place to find surf camp packages in Morocco.
  4. Find the best local tours with GetYourGuide. It’s the easiest way to visit places like Paradise Valley or Timlalin Dunes.
  5. Make sure you’re connected as soon as you get off the plane with Airalo’s Moroccan eSIM.
  6. Set up a Wise travel card to save on international transaction fees.
  7. And if you’re working online (or want to watch Netflix in your downtime) I highly recommend getting set up with a SurfShark VPN.

And you’re sorted.

Day 1: Explore the Medina & Watch the Sunset

Arrive in Essaouira and check in to your accommodation – ideally a riad inside the medina for convenience and character. The city is compact, so you won’t need taxis to get around. Begin your trip with a wander through the medina’s blue-and-white alleyways. Unlike Marrakech, the souks here are relaxed and easy to navigate. Keep an eye out for vintage finds and artisan woodcrafts.

For secondhand treasures, check out my guide to Thrift Shopping in Morocco, which includes Essaouira’s local souk.

Make your way to the port for lunch. You can either try the catch of the day grilled fresh at one of the stalls or head to a nearby seafood restaurant.

After lunch, climb the ramparts at Skala de la Ville. The views of the Atlantic from here are meditative.

Find a rooftop bar in the medina to watch the sunset. Essaouira has a few gems that promise a solid crowd, live music, and panoramic views.

Day 2: Maxo Relaxo

Essaouira isn’t a go-to surf spot for serious swells, but with consistent mellow waves, it’s great for beginners. Book a lesson or rent a board from one of the surf schools near Plage d’Essaouira.

For everyone else, a long walk or a little laze on the beach is equally appealing.

Treat yourself to a hammam. You can opt for the full trad local experience, or the more luxurious tourist version.

Here’s a breakdown of the best spots in my guide to Hammams in Essaouira.

Afterwards, grab a bite in the medina, or relax in a cafe and watch the world go by.

Head back to one of the rooftop bars you didn’t try on night one, or opt for a more low-key evening with some live Gnaoua music.

Day 3: Day Trip or Deeper Dive

Take a half-day trip to Sidi Kaouki – a quiet beach town about 30 minutes south. It’s ideal for a surf session or just relaxing at a beachfront cafe.

Personally, between the history, the art galleries and the carpet stores, I think there’s plenty to keep you occupied in Essaouira’s medina for another day. Go for a wander, let yourself get lost, buy something you’ll cherish forever, and accept the jewellery store owner’s offer for a cup of mint tea.

Where to Stay in Essaouira

The best place to stay is inside the medina, where you’ll be steps away from everything. Riad options range from budget-friendly to beautifully restored boutique hotels. For ocean views, consider something just outside the city walls.

Final Tips for Visiting Essaouira

  • Best time to visit: Spring and autumn offer mild weather. Summer is breezy and cooler than inland Morocco, but very windy.
  • What to pack: Layers, a solid tote bag for all your accumulated knick-knacks, comfy walking shoes, and a beach towel.
  • Getting here: Essaouira is 3 hours from Marrakech and 4.5 from Agadir by bus or car. Check out my full guide on Essaouira transport.
  • Travel essentials: Make sure you have insurance. I highly recommend SafetyWing. A local SIM card and VPN also come in handy.
